: Original paper cover with brown illustration; stapled binding. Very fragile. Paper cover is brittle and chipped around the edges, but the entire image is visible. An advertisement for Florence Etching Silk is on the inside cover, and an advertisement for Corticelli Purse Twist is on the back cover. The inside back cover is obscured with a pasted clipping of a wide knitted edge. Pages are foxed and tanned, but less brittle than the cover. This booklet contains instructions for working with knitting silk, and directions for different patterns, including lace edging. There are a number of silk mitten patterns, a lampshade pattern, and other fancy knitting stitches useful in any creation. There is also an essay on how Corticelli silk is made. The Nonotuck Silk Company was originally established as the North Hampton Silk Company. It developed from the efforts of Samuel Whitmarsh in Leeds and Florence, and was for a time operated by members of a utopian society active in abolitionism, of which Sojourner Truth was a member. After the commune dissolved, Samuel Hill ran the company as Nonotuck Silk Company, which eventually acquired the Corticelli Silk Mills. Paperback, acceptable condition. 62 pages, 12mo.
